Local Responsibility Area Fire Severity Zones
Published on March 20, 2025
Welcome to the American Canyon Fire Protection District’s fire hazard severity zone information site. This site provides information about the new CAL FIRE rollout of fire hazard severity zones within the Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) for the American Canyon Fire Protection District. In accordance with California Government Code (CGC) Section 51178.5, the American Canyon Fire Protection District is required to provide public access to the proposed maps(PDF, 1MB) and host a comment period.
Proposed Map
It is important to stress that the new severity zone maps were created by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) under the direction of the State Fire Marshal. The American Canyon Fire Protection District does not control the creation of the map but is required to ensure the community has the opportunity to review the maps and are able to provide feedback.
CGC Section 51179(a) mandates that local agencies “shall designate, by ordinance, moderate, high, and very high fire severity zones in [their] jurisdiction within 120 days” of receiving the recommendations from the State Fire Marshal per Section CGC 51178.
CGC Section 51178 requires the State Fire Marshal to identify areas in the state as moderate, high, and very high fire severity zones based on fuel loading, slope, fire weather, wind and other factors.
The goal of the maps is to provide information for land planning, building/fire code enforcement and wildfire mitigation strategies. Public comments can help identify concerns the public has, confirm that the data is correct and help improve the understanding of how these zones may impact residents, businesses and emergency response planning.
Public Comment
We encourage all American Canyon Fire Protection District residents and stakeholders to review the proposed maps and submit comments. Public participation is important in this process to ensure the American Canyon community is more informed about the risk associated with wildland fires.
The American Canyon Fire Protection District’s comment period is open now and is scheduled to close on April 15, 2025. Thereafter, the proposed map will be presented to Fire District Board of Directors as shown by CAL FIRE on April 22. All public comments submitted during the comment period will be included in this presentation.
