Prevention

The goal of fire prevention is to provide the highest level of customer care and service to the citizens and businesses in American Canyon. The District participates in educational programs, such as "Fire Prevention Week", school fire drills, and the "Safe" program to increase community awareness of fire safety and prevention. Our service priorities:

  • Partnering with the Community while promoting Fire and Life Safety.
  • Providing Public Education and awareness to reduce the fire and life safety risk.
  • Utilizing well-trained inspectors to educate the public while conducting a comprehensive inspection and code enforcement program.
  • Investigating the case and origin of fire.
  • Fire and Life Safety records and maintenance.

Burn Permits & Regulations

Burning is strictly prohibited within the City Limits of American Canyon.

Burning Outside City Limits

  • If you are outside the City Limits but within the American Canyon Fire Protection District (ACFPD) jurisdiction, you may apply for a CAL FIRE burn permit online at burnpermit.fire.ca.gov.
  • For assistance, contact the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit of CAL FIRE: (707) 967-1400 (Business Hours) or (707) 963-4112 (After Hours).

Permit Requirements

  • Plan your burn in advance and ensure compliance with all local regulations.
  • Only burn dry, natural vegetation (leaves, pine needles, tree trimmings).
  • Do not burn trash, painted wood, or debris.
  • Fires must be attended and controlled at all times.

Additional Considerations

  • Air Quality Restrictions: Check with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) for open burning allowances.
  • Seasonal Burning: In Napa County, residential burn piles with permits are allowed during the "Winter Preparedness" season (typically November 1 – May 1).
  • Large Piles: Burn piles larger than 4’x4’ require an LE-5 permit from CAL FIRE. Contact your local CAL FIRE office to obtain one.

Fire Safety & Liability

  • You are legally responsible for any fire that escapes your control or damages neighboring property. Civil and/or criminal penalties may apply.
  • Before You Burn: Once your burn permit is approved, notify the American Canyon Fire Protection District at (707) 551-5650 to inform personnel of your planned burn.

Please stay safe and burn responsibly!
